The 8th International Tennis Tournament St. Petersburg Open will take place on October 21-27, 2002

St. Petersburg Open-2002 – the International series ATP Tennis Tournament (prize money 800,000 USD) – has introduced its new commercial partner – Grand Hotel Europe – during the press-conference, held on April 23, 2002. The official agreement between the Tournament and the Hotel has been signed on April 18.

Tournament's Directorate is sure that Grand Hotel Europe, which was recognized as a best hotel in Russia last year, will express all its hospitality towards the participants and guests of St. Petersburg Open-2002.

The new tournament's style for 2002, which was chosen according to the results of an open tender, was presented at the press-conference. The symbol of St. Petersburg Open-2002 is a cute tennis ball, which is inviting tennis fans to visit the courts in SCC "Petersburgsky".

According to the words of Mr. Mikhail Rydnik, Tournament Director, the preparation for the tournament is also conducted in other aspects: first of all, that is the aspect of forming the list of the participants for the tournament. Mr. Rydnik informed that Yevgeny Kafelnikov (the Olympic Games champion) has signed the contact (already in February) for participating in St. Petersburg Open-2002. There is no doubt that Marat Safin, St. Petersburg Open-2000, 2001 winner, will also sign the agreement for participating in St. Petersburg Open-2002 soon.

The tournament of 2002 is likely to have an opportunity to boast its presentability, because the negotiations between St. Petersburg Open and Gustavo Kuerten, Lleyton Hewitt, Greg Rusedski and other stars of world tennis are in a process. Sebastien Grosjean has already provisionally agreed to participate in the tournament this year.

One of the main news for the journalists, was the information, that St. Petersburg Open owners – BALTUNEXIM BANK and CONTI GROUP decided to increase the prize money up to 1,000,000 USD. If this decision will be approved by the ATP Board of Directors, it may enter into a power already this year. And it can become an additional attractive factor for the world tennis stars, while they are considering to participate in St. Petersburg Open.

All the above mentioned improvements are closely connected to the improvements in tournament management: there's no wonder that the attention of St. Petersburg business elite to the tournament is growing. The contracts of collaboration between St. Petersburg Open and "FINNAIR" (official air carrier), "PULKOVO", "International Clinic" (official medical clinic), "Ramec" (official computering items supplier), "Peterlink", "Metrocom" have been already signed. The collaboration between St. Petersburg Open and TV company "CTC 6 channel", "Sport-Express" newspaper, "Teleport" company, "Project 111", "Chupa Chups" company ("St. Petersburg Open Junior" sponsors), "Orticon" company, "St. Petersburg Taxophones", "Independent Media" publishing house magazines and other companies will be continued.
