Press release #5
Pavel, Youzhny, and Gaudio are the first quarterfinalists.

One of the matches that opened the tournament third day decided a first advance to the quarterfinal (Andrei Pavel (ROM) - Tuomas Ketola (FIN), and another one decided one of the three remaining vacancies in the second round (Max Mirnyi (BLR) - Jan Vacek (CZE).

They both finished just simultaneously with the similar score. Pavel won over a qualifier Ketola with clear superiority, becoming the first of the quarterfinalists and Mirnyi easily advanced to the second round, getting twice more points than his rival did.

"It happens so, that in Moscow I'm better in doubled and in St.Petersburg - in singles. As a matter of fact, here I feel very well", - said Max Mirnyi after the match.

The Russian Mikhail Youzhny became the second quarterfinalist as he defeated the Argentine Guillermo Coria. But for this win Youzhny had to ply three sets as well as in the first round. Soon in the first set Youzhny had broken the rival's serve but Coria easily foughtback. Result of the set was decided in the last game when Youzhny had overtricked his rival in a quite showy way when he served the last point.

"I failed in the beginning of the second set and just couldn't concentrate up to the end of the set", - Youzhny explained his loss in the second set.

In the decisive set the struggle appeared to be rather stubborn, but that was Youzhny who finished it with a showy smash.

Unfortunately, Andrei Stoliarov didn't follow the example of Youzhny. In the match with another Argentine Gaston Gaudio he struggled only in the first set. On the central court the day was finished with the first round matches participated by the first and the third seeded players of the event - the Frenchmen Sebastian Grosjean and the American Andre Agassi. Grosjean won over the Armenian Sargis Sargasian with a big safety margin. Crowd raised into applause, when Agassi was entering the court. And their expectations were not in vain. They saw wonderful play at the net and short drops performed by the great master. And no one might be deceived by the resulting score 6-3 6-4 - Andre spent not more energy than needed to win.

Finally, the last year winners of the event Andrei Golovanov /Yevgeny Kafelnikov defeated in three sets a double of qualifiers Julian Knowle /Michael Kohlmann (AUT/GER). The sixth game in the second set became a midpoint. The Russians broke the serve and the rivals got nervous and actually lost their game.
